All the shares of a corporation into which ownership is divided. Meaning that a stock represents fractional ownership of a corporation. Also known as equity, they make up the foundation of many investor’s portfolios. They are most prominently sold on stock markets, but can also be sold privately. Owning stock in a company normally entitles the stockholder to a proportion of the companies earnings, proceeds from its liquidation, or voting power (all these proportional to the amount of stocks held).
