A figure used by the investment community to determine a company’s size. It refers to the total dollar market value of a company’s outstanding shares of stock. The market capitalization (or “market cap”) of the company is calculated by multiplying the number of these outstanding stocks by the current market price of a single share. Companies are typically divided between large-caps ($10 billion +), mid-caps ($2-$10 billion), and small-caps ($300 million – $2 billion).
