A marketplace where securities, commodities, and other financial instruments are traded. It creates a central platform for traders (from businesses to governments) to sell securities to public investors. One of the most well-known examples is the New York Stock Exchange. In recent times, the exchange model has moved from being a physical place (eg, the trading floor) to being primarily virtual. Today, the vast majority of trades take place online, leading to the rise of virtual exchanges.
