A term used to refer to a list of the 500 largest companies in the United States as compiled by Fortune magazine each year. The companies are ranked according to their annual revenues and fiscal years. Since 1955, to be included in the Fortune 500 is taken as a mark of prestige, and companies included on it are generally considered to be of the highest caliber.
